WHY ARE WE REPLACING THE OLD "NRA BASIC PISTOL" WITH THE NEW “SCOTSHOT HANDGUN-I, PISTOL BASICS”?
Recently, the NRA completed its scheduled transition from a 100% Instructor led "Basic Pistol" class to a new "Blended Learning" one. In this new course, students register directly with NRA for a paid 8 hour on-line course. Once they pass this, students then seek out an NRA Certified Instructor to complete the course by actually handling live firearms and shooting them on the range. With the course split into two parts - an online part containing all the facts about guns and shooting, and a range part with the shooting itself there is no continuity of instruction for you, the student. Additionally, if you haven’t completed the online portion when the day comes that you have booked the range part, then you won’t be able to take it and will have to reschedule.
Here at ScotShot and GSSC we believe that this isn’t the best way to teach people about safe gun handling, safe gun storage and gun safety on the range. Instead, we prefer to work with the students from the moment they begin, engaging them in our "Active Learning" philosophy to ensure that they receive the best and most stable knowledge and skills platform upon which to build their approach to handgun use, in whichever discipline they choose. ScotShot Handgun-I, Pistol Basics is modeled very closely on the old NRA Basic Pistol and is taught by the same team of experienced instructors that taught NRA Basic Pistol. The class certificate is also recognized as "Proof of Training" for the popular Florida Concealed Carry Permit. We welcome everyone to the course and know you’ll enjoy it.
WHAT THIS COURSE IS FOR
ScotShot Handgun-I, Pistol Basics provides a comprehensive foundation to pistol shooting in all action types. It is a 100% Instructor-led class providing a total immersion introductory learning environment for new and experienced pistol owners alike. It is designed to give the student insight to the Knowledge, Skills and Attitude appropriate for safe, recreational pistol shooting. ScotShot Handgun-I is an approximately 8-hour training course that covers the major pistol actions (ie: single and double action revolver and semi-automatic handguns). The course is part class, part live-fire. The focus is on safe gun handling and the fundamentals of shooting a pistol. This course serves as a natural precursor for more advanced classes, such as ScotShot Handgun II - V, NRA Personal Protection Inside and Outside the Home, and concealed carry techniques.
WHAT THIS COURSE CONTAINS
We start with the rights and responsibilities of firearms owners and proceed to a detailed discussion of the parts and function of the major handgun types and actions, and how to handle pistols safely. We discuss how ammunition works and describe its component parts. The course next discusses the fundamentals of pistol shooting. Then we move to the firing range and study the two-handed standing position with .22 caliber revolvers and semi-automatic pistols. Depending on student progress and comfort, and at the Instructor's discretion, we may introduce one or more other calibers, such as: 9mm, 357 magnum, .38 special, 40 caliber, .44 special and 45 ACP. Students may also bring their own handguns to class. Afterwards, we return to the classroom and discuss pistol cleaning and storage, then finish the class with a short diagnostic examination, and a discussion on exercises and methods for improving your shooting skills.
WHAT YOU NEED TO BRING
This is a beginner-level course, suitable for people with no training or only a little. You can take this course in advance of obtaining your own pistol; in fact, it may help you decide on what you like and dislike. It can be taken by adults and supervised older children. The only things you need to bring are a willingness to learn, a desire to succeed, and a light lunch. If there is someone in your home who will be using your firearm in your presence and under your direct supervision, then please consider having them register for the class with you. If you choose to bring your own firearm, you may, at the Instructor's discretion, substitute it in the calibers listed above.
WHAT YOU WILL TAKE AWAY
We provide all training materials, firearms, ammunition, classroom and range facilities, coffee and snacks. At the end of the course, we conduct a short diagnostic examination and issue a Certificate of Training. This can serve as "Proof of Training" for the popular Florida Concealed Weapons Permit application. Most of all, you'll take away a great experience, a working knowledge of handguns and handgun shooting in general, your shooting strengths and weaknesses, and improved safety concepts.
Thank you for choosing ScotShot and GSSC for your firearms training - see you on the range!
This class runs 8-9 hours. Please feel free to bring snacks or lunch. A refridgerator and microwave are available.
Please note: GSSC reserves the right to substitute other qualified instructors without notice.
