NAEMT Bleeding Control for the Injured
Who Should Take This Course: This course is designed for anyone with the desire to be prepared for an active shooter situation or other traumatic event where bystanders are on the front line. Consistent with the Hartford Consensus, this course was developed by the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians (NAEMT) in response to recommendations from the US Departments of Homeland Security and Health and Human Services and serves to bridge the gap between first responders and civilians in situations where immediate application of lifesaving measures by bystanders will have an impact on reducing casualties.
What Will Be Taught: This course will provide instruction in basic lifesaving measures including bleeding control with both commercially available and improvised tourniquets, bleeding control with wound packing materials including commercially available hemostatic gauze, and opening an airway to allow a victim of traumatic injury to breathe. Hands-on skill stations will be conducted to teach and evaluate the student’s ability to demonstrate the necessary skills for certification.
What You Need to Bring: All student learning materials and equipment will be provided on the day of the course. Participants are encouraged but not required to bring their own equipment if they wish to facilitate discussion or have any questions. Snacks and drinks are permitted and vending machines are available.
What Is Provided: A certificate of participation will be provided upon successful completion of the course. Successful completion of the course is dependent upon the student’s ability to demonstrate the necessary skills without the assistance of the instructor. A PowerPoint outline of the course will also be provided for the student to keep as reference.
